Welcome to the Quantum Circuits Research & Engineering Workgroup (qcrew)! We are a multi-disciplinary experimental research team in Singapore's Centre for Quantum Technologies. We build modular quantum devices to enable robust quantum computing and explore novel phenomena in quantum physics.

As a team, we are committed to create a diverse and inclusive environment for everyone. We celebrate our differences and actively work towards combating discrimination and outdated stereotypes.

New papers published in PRX Quantum!
Two of our new experiments are published In PRX Quantum, a brilliant way to start the new year! Our strategy of sticking to small, tailored devices to probe interesting quantum effects is doing very well. Many more exciting new experiments to look forward to in 2025!

Our work "On-demand transposition across light-matter interaction regimes in bosonic cQED" has been published in Nature Communications! It was an exciting project with lots of creative engineering. Well done team!

The two opinion pieces aim to share our perspective on the rapidly evolving field of bosonic cQED. We also wrapped up the challenging but fun experiment on integrating fast flux-tunability with high-Q bosonic cQED systems and very excited to share this result!

About the PI - Yvonne Y. Gao​

University of Oxford (B.A); Yale University (Ph.D)

Yvonne is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and a Principal Investigator in the Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore. Her research leverages bosonic cQED devices to study interesting phenomena and useful applications in quantum information science. 

Yvonne is also an active community-builder, spearheading several initiatives to inspire and empower the next generation of young scientists. Her contributions to advancing quantum technologies and pushing for positive changes in the scientific community have brought her many prestigious accolades, such as the Young Scientist Award, the Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellowship and MIT Tech Review’s Innovator’s Under 35 (Asia-Pacific), Singapore Young Award, and recently the IYQ Quantum 100 Award.

Our Focus​

Expanding the bosonic cQED hardware toolbox

We design and construct new quantum elements to unlock new capabilities in bosonic cQED. From flux-tuning apparatus to tailored non-linear structures, these components provide the key building blocks for more versatile control of bosonic cQED systems and enable a wide range of novel applications.

Leveraging non-Gaussian bosonic states for novel quantum applications

We study interesting physical effects, from quantum interference to multipartite entanglement, using the bosonic cQED hardware. This knowledge enables us to harness the unique features of these non-Gaussian states for power applications, such as quantum error mitigation and quantum metrology.

Developing techniques for bosonic quantum information processing

We investigate strategies to optimise the key technical challenges in bosonic quantum information processing, such as more efficient methods to reconstruct complex quantum states to more robust ways to engineer quantum gates in single and multi-mode devices.

We have openings for talented young scientists who are ready to take up a leadership role in the group to spearhead new initiatives and provide supervision and guidance to junior members of the team. You will also work closely with the PI to develop future experimental goals and shape the general research direction of the group. There will also be ample opportunity to explore your own ideas and participate in grant-writing processes. We aim to provide you a challenging and supportive environment to perfect your research leadership skills and get ready for your next career step! 

Requirement: Good Ph.D track record in experimental physics, electrical/RF engineering, strong team-player.

We are seeking motivated students with excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for experimental quantum physics. You will be working closely with the senior members of the lab to design, build, and characterise quantum devices. You’ll also be given the opportunities to develop your own ideas and make impact discoveries! As part of the vibrant and diverse quantum community in CQT, we work towards fostering a supportive and exciting environment for our students to grow as a scientist and learn about different aspects of physics. We are currently accepting applications for 2025. 

Requirement: Strong undergraduate track record in experimental physics/engineering disciplines; solid foundation in quantum mechanics. 

We offer year-long research assistantships to undergraduate or masters students who are passionate about learning how to build quantum hardware. You will work alongside the team to perform day-to-day operations of the lab, carry out various experiments, and contribute to the development and optimisation of key experimental apparatus. Through this, you will have the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about quantum circuits and related technical areas. This experience will provide a great foundation for you to continue your scientific journey either as a Ph.D candidate or member of the blooming quantum computing industry. 

Requirement: Undergraduate/masters degree in physics/engineering, strong hands-on skills.

We provide short-term internships undergraduate and masters students who are interested getting involved in building quantum devices and learning about the physics behind it. You will work under the guidance of  the senior members of the team on one or more well-defined technical problems, e.g. simulations of new devices, FPGA programming, etc. 

Requirements: Good problem-solving skills & some background in physics/engineering.
